Laszlo Tabori Celebrates Milestone 'Sub-Four' Anniversary

>> view article with pictures!

In May, 2005, admirers of Laszlo Tabori gathered to honor the legendary Hungarian middle-distance man with a surprise commemoration of the 50th anniversary of his becoming the third man ever to break the four-minute mile (3.59.00 on May 28, 1955).

Only the great Roger Bannister (3:59.4, 1954) and John Landy (3:58.0, 1954) preceded him in his effort.

Laszlo, who now coaches recreational to elite runners, as well as operating his own sports shop in Southern California, was brought to the home of Coach Mike Wagenbach (L.A. Trade Tech)--one of his former protégés--under false pretenses. Instead of meeting a new athletic prospect, Laszlo faced a crowd of past and present running students, coaching colleagues, friends and family wishing him a happy anniversary.

(Torrance, Calif.) Former vaulting protégés, coaching colleagues, friends and family gathered on July 8, 2006 at Alpine Village in Torrance, California to help Coach Bill Blewett blow out 75 birthday candles. The pole vault coach - renowned for working with many of Southern California's top pole vaulters from the '60s to the present - was taken on a jog down memory lane as speaker after speaker regaled party-goers with tales of Bill and "Bill's Boys". The event was organized by former Blewett vaulter Clark Millman, who also served as emcee. As the stories began to unfold, it became abundantly clear how infuential Bill has been to all of his vaulters, and to sports in general. Among Bill's Boys, Rich Yates (70's), Tom Hinthaus (70's & 80's), and Kimo Morris (80's & 90's) thrilled the crowd with tales of Bill and his signature effect on teenage angst, competition and life lessons. Even Steve Smith, long-time competitor of Bill's vaulters throughout the 70's and 80's, shared some warm words with Bill, echoing the recurring theme of the evening of Bill's unmistakable impact on the sport of pole vaulting. Steve presented Bill with a vintage cover of Sports Illustrated magazine featuring him as a young athlete in the early '70s, signed to Bill with the words "Thanks for doing so much for so many for so little."

What has your equipment supplier done for you lately?
On Track, Panda Express Team with Youth On Track Foundation for Successful 2004 Free Clinic Series for Young Athletes, Coaches

>> view article with pictures!

Nearly 300 coaches and athletes were treated to three free track and field clinics in January and February, courtesy of Youth On Track Foundation, a not-for-profit entity formed in 2003 to help develop the track and field athletes and coaches of the future. Track and field equipment supplier On Track helped organize, outfit and publicize the day-long clinics, while the Chinese restaurant chain Panda Express treated all participants to an on-site lunch.

Dubbed "Speed & Altitude 101", the clinics were hosted at three Southern California locations - Saddleback College of Mission Viejo (January 17), Occidental College of Los Angeles (January 31) and University of Southern California of Los Angeles (February 7). A total of 298 athletes and coaches ranging in ages from 12 years of age to 50+ received a high level of coaching in six event areas - sprints, hurdles, high jump, pole vault, shot put and discus - from a team of 18 coaches and volunteer staff members.

Clinic organizers received many compliments from those in attendance. "I just wanted to let you know that all of my athletes had a great time at the Clinic. All of the coaches were professional and hands-on. Amber, Jordan, Marcus and James are thankful for your time and consideration", wrote Clim Moore, a parent and coach who attended one of the three clinics.

According to high school athlete, Elmer Guzman, "The track clinic I attended, ŒSpeed and Altitude 101) helped me to understand a lot about hurdling. I had the opportunity to meet and work with very experienced coaches who helped me work on my hurdling form. I also learned about weight training, what types of shoes to use, eating right and the type of mentality needed to hurdle. The food that was provided was also very good. Overall it was a great learning experience and I would definitely like to be a part of another clinic like this one".

Youth On Track Foundation plans to hold more of these clinics in 2005. Please visit www.ontrackandfield.com for announcements of future clinics as schedules are developed.
