Montreal was the stage on which Vasily Alexeev became the ninth weightlifter in history to win two Olympic gold medals. But the Soviet hero was thwarted in his quest to become the only man to win a thrid gold in the sport when he failed at his opening snatch of 180 kilos in Moscow.

French light
heavyweight champion Charles Rigoulot helped transform his sport with his quick lifting style, which he used to take the gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. He outlifted his closest competitor by over 27
Standing 4'8", Joseph de Pietro became the smallest-ever Olympic champion by lifting 305.5 kilos (676.5 lbs.) at the 1948 Olympic Games. This Herculean effort earned him the world bantamweight weightlifting record.
