Bob Beamon's 29' 2 1/2" World Record in Mexico City (1968) is considered to be the greatest performance in track and field history. His mark surpasses the World Long Jump Record by nearly two feet.

Igor Ter–Ovanesyan, the Soviet long jumper, went head–to– head in Olympic competition with American Ralph Boston in 1960, ’64 and ’68, making theirs one of the legendary rivalries of the event. Ter–Ovanesyan later served as his country’s national jumps coach.
