In the early 20th century, a group of Irish-American weight men - dubbed "the whales" for their general heft - dominated the Olympic throws events. Although he could keep up with the best of them at the training table, discus thrower Martin Sheridan's slighter build made him a whale by heritage and asociation only. (The sock garters were not standard issue U.S. uniform accessories, although they did provide a civilized touch.) |
